All right! Is that some of the Malinke drumming you mentioned? Definitely has some bump in it.

Yes, it is - although I'd have to check to see if Djagbe is a Malinke rhythm, or if it comes from another group of people.... the big folkloric troupes (all the "ballets") tend to adapt rhythms from all over their respective countries/regions for stage performance. (And also because people like "new" music.)

Mamady Keita is one of the best African teachers working in the West - that's him in the photo, back home in Guinea. (And playing Djagbe, believe it or not.)
